What should one read if they do not know the dua for Janazah Salah?
QUESTION:
I am being asked what the substitute dua for the dua in namaz e janaza is. Can they read any of these?
There are some people who don’t know the sunnah dua, so can they make any dua?
I remember being told when I was little that surah ikhlas was okay as well, can you please confirm?

ANSWER:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
As Muslims, we should make an active effort to memorise the famous supplications taught to us by Rasulullah ﷺ for specific occasions including the famous supplication of Janazah Salah, which is as follows [1]:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الإِسْلاَمِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ
Transliteration: Al-laa-hum-magh-fir-li-hay-yi-na wa may-yi-ti-naa wa sha-hi-di-naa wa ghaa-i-bi-na wa-sa-ghee-ri-na wa ka-bee-ree-na wa zha-ka-ri-na wa un-thaa-naa. Al-laa-hum-ma man ah-yay-ta-hoo min-na fa-ah-yi-hee a-lal is-laam wa man ta-waf-fay-ta-hu min-na fa-ta-waf-fa-hu-a-lal ee-maan.
Translation: ‘O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whom among us You keep alive, then let such a life be upon Islam, and whom among us You take unto Yourself, then let such a death be upon faith’. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi: Hadeeth Number: 1024)
Nonetheless, if a person does not know this supplication for the Janazah Salah, then he may read any supplication, for example:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِوَالِدَيْنَا وَلَهُ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ
Transliteration: Al-laa-hum-magh-fir la-naa wa li-waa-li-day-naa wa la-hoo wa lil mu’-mi-nee-na wal mu’-mi-naat. [2]
Translation: O Allah, forgive us, our parents, the deceased, and all believing men and believing women.
However, since Surah al-Ikhlas is not a supplication, it cannot be recited during the Janazah Salah. [3]

ويذكر الدعاء المعروف «اللهم اغفر لحينا وميتنا» إن كان يحسنه وإلا يذكر ما يدعو به في التشهد «اللهم اغفر للمؤمنين والمؤمنات إلى اخره»

يقول: اللهم اغفر لحينا وميتنا إن كان يحسن ذلك، وإلا فيأتي بأي دعاء شاء لأن الثناء على الله والصلاة على النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - يعقبهما الدعاء والاستغفار، قال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - «إذا أراد أحدكم أن يدعو فليحمد الله وليصل على النبي ثم يدعو»

ويدعو في الثالثة للميت ولنفسه ولأبويه وللمسلمين، ولا توقيت في الدعاء سوى أنه بأمور الاخرة، وإن دعا بالمأثور فما أحسنه وأبلغه

ولم يعين المصنف الدعاء؛ لأنه لا توقيت فيه سوى أنه بأمور الاخرة، وإن دعا بالمأثور فما أحسنه وأبلغه

ويجوز غيره من الأدعية إذ ليس فيه دعاء موقت

وقال في السراج ومن لا يحسن الدعاء يقول اللهم اغفر لنا وله وللمؤمنين والمؤمنات أو يقول ما تيسر عليه

(قوله والمأثور أولى): ثم أفاد أن من لم يحسن الدعاء بالمأثور يقول اللهم اغفر لنا ولوالدينا وله وللمؤمنين والمؤمنات

(ولا قراءة ولا تشهد فيها) وعين الشافعي الفاتحة في الأولى. وعندنا تجوز بنية الدعاء وتكره بنية القراءة لعدم ثبوتها فيها عنه - عليه الصلاة والسلام -

قوله (وتكره بنية القراءة) في البحرعن التجنيس والمحيط: لا يجوز لأنها محل الدعاء دون القراءة اهـ ومثله في الولوالجية والتاتارخانية. وظاهره أن الكراهة تحريمية
