Islamic Beliefs

Belief about Islam

Islam is to testify and believe with certainty that all that which our Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) came with is true and correct. The foundations of the creed of Islam are six things: to firmly believe in Allah (the Exalted), His Angels, His Scriptures, His Messengers, the Day of Judgment and Destiny.

Belief about Allah (God)

· Allah Ta`ala is the ultimate authority. No one is worthy of worship but Allah. He is endowed with all the qualities of perfection and He is pure from all forms of weaknesses and deficiencies. He is attributed with existence, pre-eternity, infinity, absolute dissimilarity from all contingent beings, self-subsistence, oneness, life, knowledge, omnipotence, will, hearing, seeing, speech and that He is living, all knowing, all powerful, willing, all hearing, all seeing and speaking.

· Allah is self-existent, and non-existence cannot befall Him. Similarly, He is the Ever-living. He has no beginning and no ending. He will never cease to exist nor will non-existence ever befall him.

· He is One. He has no partner, equivalent, rival or resistance.

· There is nothing that resembles Allah – not in His existence, nor in His attributive qualities, nor in His actions.

· He is All-Knowing of everything – seen or unseen, big or small – even before their existence.

· He is Omnipotent and All-Powerful.

Belief about the angels

Angels are subtle bodies created from light. They are honourable servants of Allah who do exactly what they have been instructed to do and they never disobey Allah. There are innumerable angels, who carry out different tasks, including: conveying the messages from Allah to the prophets; protecting the people; taking out the souls of people; blowing the trumpet on the Last Day; causing the rain to fall; inscribing the actions of the people; guarding Paradise and Hell fire; holding the throne of Allah etc.

Belief about the divine scriptures

Allah had revealed a number of scriptures upon His messengers explaining His commandments and warnings. From among these scriptures are: Zabur [given to Dawud AS], Torah [given To Musa AS], Injil [given to `Isa AS], and the Qur`an. The Qur`an is the scripture revealed by Allah to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). It is one of the greatest miracles and signs of the prophethood of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) . It is free from any errors, weaknesses or crookedness. It is the last revealed scripture which abrogates all previous ones and whose words will remain until the Last Day [as assured by Allah Himself].

Belief about the prophets (Peace Be Upon Them)

There were many prophets of Allah, about twenty-five of whom are mentioned in the Qur`an (including Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Isma`il, Is`haq, Musa, `Isa etc.). They were attributed with the most distinct qualities – they were free from all – outward and inward, major or minor – actions and statements of disobedience and disgrace. Hence, no prophet was ever disobedient, lying, treacherous or negligent; rather, they were honest, trustworthy, most complete in nobility and understanding, and had propagated as divinely instructed without concealing anything. They were chosen and ordered by Allah to deliver His message to the [assigned] people – and, indeed, they fulfilled the task of propagation to the full. The first messenger was Adam and the last was Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Them All).

Belief about the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)

· The life of our Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is the best of lives.

· The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) is unique and superior to other prophets: (1) he is the best amongst them; (2) he was sent to the entire mankind; and (3) he is the seal of prophethood.

· He is the seal of all the prophets (khatam `n-nabiyyin).

· From amongst his many inimitable miracles (mu`jizat) and proofs of his prophethood was the – everlasting miracle – The Qur`an.

Belief about the Hereafter

The questioning of the people in the graves; the reward and the punishment in the graves; the resurrection of bodies on the Day of Judgement; the weighing of the deeds on scales of justice and the subsequent reckoning; and the delivery of the book of deeds in the right hand [for the righteous] or the left [for disbelievers]; the crossing of the sir`at bridge; and the entry into Jannah (Paradise) [for believers] or Jahannam (Hellfire) [for the disbelievers].

Belief about Fate and Destiny

All the actions of a person (voluntary and involuntary) occur in accordance to the Will and Knowledge of Allah.

Belief about the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)

The best of people after the prophets are the Companions of Prophet Muhammad (also known as the Sahabah). However, the best of all of them are the four Caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali (May Allah Be Pleased With Them).
