QUESTION:

Dearest Mufti Sahib, can you answer these three urgent questions. Firstly, during Salah, if the ringtone goes off, how do we switch it off. Secondly, are we allowed to have ringtones which are like music or ringtones which play Nasheed or Adhan or even a Qur’an Ayah. Thirdly, is it allowed for Imams to remind people before Salah to switch off their phones?

ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

a) First and foremost, it is crucial to be highly aware and considerate when entering the Masjid, ensuring that your phone is on silent mode. This is to prevent any disruption to the Imām and the Salāh, as the Masjid is a sacred place that deserves utmost respect. However, in the event that your phone unintentionally rings during Salāh, then one should discreetly switch it off by placing one hand in your pocket and turning off the call without removing the phone.

b) When selecting a ringtone, it is advisable to opt for a simple one and refrain from using music, as it is prohibited, and more severe particularly when played within the confines of the Masjid. It is also best to avoid using verses from the Holy Qur’ān, Adhān, or Nasheed as your ringtone, as it may be perceived as disrespectful, creating the impression that the ringtone serves solely to alert you to an incoming call.

c) If the Imām of the Masjid issues a reminder before Salāh for individuals to silence their phones, this is not only permissible but also appropriate.
