ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The name ‘Safa’ (صفا) denotes purity, [1] fineness and fairness. In Islām, one is not permitted to take bad omens, for the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) has said:

لا عَدْوَى ولا طِيَرَةَ ولا صَفَرَ ولا هامَةَ

Diseases are not contagious (without Allah’s permission), nor is there any bad omen, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar, nor is there any bad omen due to any particular bird. [2]

Furthermore, it is not unusual for a new-born baby to initially have health conditions. [3] We pray that Allah Ta’ālā grants her a swift and complete recovery, and keeps her in good health. Āmeen.

You may observe the following practices:

  • Recite the following du’ā three times during the day and three times during the night; then blow upon the baby. This du’ā will serve as a protection from any sudden affliction. [4]

Bismillahil ladhi la yadurru m’asmihi shay’un fil ardi wala fiss sama’i wahuwas sameeul ‘aleem.

In the Name of Allah, with whose Name nothing can harm in the earth nor in the sky; and He is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing.

  • Recite Āyah al-Kursī, once in the morning and once in the evening. This can be found in the Holy Qur’an, Surah 2, Verse 255. After reading the entire verse, blow upon the child. [5]
  • Include the following supplication when making du’ā:

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامة من كل شيطان وهامة، ومن كل عين لامة

A’udhu bikalimatillahit taammaati min kulli shaytanin wa haammatin wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah.

I seek protection in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every envious eye. [6]

And Allah Ta’ālā Knows Best
