QUESTION:
Is it permissible to use the term ‘Mawlana’ for scholars and others? Isn’t this term specific to Allah?
ANSWER:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Essentially, the term “Mawlana” encompasses a wide range of meanings, including but not limited to [1]: the Lord, the Owner, the Master, the Bestower, the Emancipator, the Helper, the Beloved, the Follower, the Neighbour, the Cousin, the Ally, the Leader, the In-law, the Servant, as well as many more meanings. Furthermore, this term has been employed by the Prophet himself, along with other prophets and revered predecessors [2]. Consequently, its usage is considered permissible.

وَهُوَ اسْمٌ يقَع عَلَى جَماعةٍ كَثيِرَة، فَهُوَ الرَّبُّ، والمَالكُ، والسَّيِّد، والمُنْعِم، والمُعْتِقُ، والنَّاصر، والمُحِبّ، والتَّابِع، والجارُ، وابنُ العَمّ، والحَلِيفُ، والعَقيد، والصِّهْر، والعبْد، والمُعْتَقُ، والمُنْعَم عَلَيه. وأكْثرها قَدْ جَاءَتْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ، فَيُضاف كُلّ واحِدٍ إِلَى مَا يَقْتَضيه الحديثُ الوَارِدُ فِيهِ

وَإِنِّي خِفْتُ الْمَوَالِيَ مِن وَرَائِي وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا فَهَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا

وَقَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ " أَنْتَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْكَ ". وَقَالَ لِجَعْفَرٍ " أَشْبَهْتَ خَلْقِي وَخُلُقِي ". وَقَالَ لِزَيْدٍ " أَنْتَ أَخُونَا وَمَوْلاَنَا
