Is it permissible to take an interest loan for desperate accommodation?

QUESTION:

I’m a woman who is married and live with my husband in Stockholm Sweden. We have currently no children. The housing situation in Stockholm Is terrible. The minimum waiting time to get an apartment in Stockholm Is 10-15 years. Another solution is subletting. Subletting is a short-term housing arrangement between the current tenant (sublessor) and a temporary occupant for a short period of time. Which means that they can throw out us any time. We live currently in a student apartment which requires a full time studies in order to live there. If I fail any course, we can lose this apartment as well. Having kids in the future in this tiny apartment is also difficult. The only solution is to buy an apartment which is mainly finances through bank loan (riba). There’s no islamic banks here in Sweden or interest free banks here. So my question is, are we allowed in this situation to get loan in order to get us a decent place to live?

ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If there is a possibility of subletting (or renting) without losing one’s occupancy, this must be explored as an alternative, whilst exercising patience and trust in Allah. [1]

Furthermore, we advise you to refer to a reliable local scholar to assist you in exploring alternative avenues of financing that are sharī’ah-compliant.

May Allah Ta’ālā ease your predicament. Āmeen.

And Allah Ta’ālā Knows Best
