Is it permissible to promote Haram if my job requires me to?

QUESTION:

Assalamu Alaikum,
I have recently started a job as a social media assistant, I’m very new in this field and don’t have much experience in it. I started last Monday and my employer was telling me what they wanted me to do and it made me worried thinking if it’s even halal for me to do this job so I’m here to ask you.

The company I’m working for is a company that designs and develops websites for businesses, so they want me to promote their company so they can get more clients. However, I realised that some of the businesses they have designed websites for are alcohol businesses (like bars) and some are beauty related (so they have used images of non Muslim women showing their awrah).

So my job is to promote the company that I work for so they get more clients so they can make more websites for various businesses. So is it permissible for me to post on social media to promote the company I work for because I’ll have to use images of non Muslim women exposing their awrah, and I’ll have to use images of alcoholic drinks. I’m worried of promoting haram things, but it’s my job and not my personal choice to promote anything that’s not permissible. I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense but I’m really concerned and I don’t want to displease Allah, my job isn’t more important than Islam. Should I leave the job or is it okay for me to do this job?
JazakAllah

ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you on your righteous intentions and we pray that Allah Ta’ālā keeps you on the straight path. Āmeen.

With regards to your question, it is impermissible to promote any form of harām. [1] Thus, we would recommend that you actively seek a position which does not require you to promote things which are impermissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once advised:

إِنَّكَ لَنْ تَدَعَ شَيْئًا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَّا بَدَّلَكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْهُ
“Verily you do not leave something for the sake of Allah except He gives you something better in exchange.” [2]

If circumstances do not permit you to leave your current position immediately, then seek forgiveness from Allah Ta’ālā until he provides a way out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has stated:

مَنْ لَزِمَ الاِسْتِغْفَارَ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ ضِيقٍ مَخْرَجًا وَمِنْ كُلِّ هَمٍّ فَرَجًا وَرَزَقَهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ
“For the one who continually asks for forgiveness, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will sustain him from where he did not even expect.” [3]

May the Almighty grant you ease in all matters. Āmeen.

And Allah Ta’ālā Knows Best
Abdullah Teladia
