Is it permissible to name a child Liwa?

QUESTION:

Assalamu aleikoum, I really like the name ‘Liva’. I have heared that the word is referenced in the Quran as Liwa and that it references the flag of the prophet Mohammed (s.a.s) were muslim get around in judgement day. Is this true, can i use this name to name my child? Is it ok to use the spelling as such “Liva”

ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Although the word ‘Liwa’ is not found in the Holy Qur’ān, it is mentioned in the Prophetic traditions (Ahādīth). For instance, one may consider the following hadith:

أنا سيد ولد آدم يوم القيامة ولا فخر وبيدي لواء الحمد ولا فخر وما من نبي يومئذ آدم فمن سواه إلا تحت لوائي…

“I am the chief of the children of Adam on the Day of Judgement and I am not boasting, and in my hand is the banner of praise and I am not boasting, and there has been no Prophet since Ādam or other than him, except that he is under my banner. [1]

Nonetheless, we are not aware of any Islamic personality with such a name, and, thus, it is preferable that you choose another name for your child. We advise you to adopt a name that is in common use amongst the Muslims and ideally, from amongst the names of the prophets, companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the pious predecessors.
