QUESTION:
Dear Mufti Sahib, is it true that we should treat our non-Muslim neighbours with care and consideration, just like Muslim neighbours?

ANSWER:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Islam places great emphasis on displaying good manners towards neighbours, regardless of their religious affiliation. With the exception of supporting actions that contradict Islamic values and going against the commands of Almighty Allah, one may express happiness at their permissible joys and offer condolences at their sorrows. Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself set an example by visiting non-Muslims who were ill and consistently demonstrated good manners and kindness towards them.

And Allah Ta’ālā Knows Best
