Can someone in the row behind fill in the empty space in the row ahead?

QUESTION:
If during Salah a person realised that he did not have wudhu and began Salah as a Muqtadi in congregation, however, during the Salah, he realised he did not have wudhu and left the saff. Because of this, there is an empty space in the row. Can the person in the row behind walk forward?
ANSWER:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, it is considered appropriate for the individual standing in the row behind to move forward and occupy the vacant space. They are allowed to walk without interruption for the length of one saff. However, if they need to walk a distance greater than one saff, it is advised for them to pause for the duration of one posture, such as the duration of rukū’ or sajdah, and then proceed with their walk for the length of one saff.

بَقِيَ مَا إذَا رَأَى الْفُرْجَةَ بَعْدَ مَا أَحْرَمَ هَلْ يَمْشِي إلَيْهَا؟ لَمْ أَرَهُ صَرِيحًا. وَظَاهِرُ الْإِطْلَاقِ نَعَمْ، وَيُفِيدُهُ مَسْأَلَةُ مَنْ جَذَبَ غَيْرَهُ مِنْ الصَّفِّ كَمَا قَدَّمْنَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْبَغِي لَهُ أَنْ يُجِيبَهُ لِتَنْتَفِي الْكَرَاهَةُ عَنْ الْجَاذِبِ، فَمَشْيُهُ لِنَفْيِ الْكَرَاهَةِ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ أَوْلَى فَتَأَمَّلْ. ثُمَّ رَأَيْت فِي مُفْسِدَاتِ الصَّلَاةِ مِنْ الْحِلْيَةِ عَنْ الذَّخِيرَةِ إنْ كَانَ فِي صَفِّ الثَّانِي فَرَأَى فُرْجَةً فِي الْأَوَّلِ فَمَشَى إلَيْهَا لَمْ تَفْسُدْ صَلَاتُهُ لِأَنَّهُ مَأْمُورٌ بِالْمُرَاصَّةِ. قَالَ - عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ - «تَرَاصُّوا فِي الصُّفُوفِ» وَلَوْ كَانَ فِي الصَّفِّ الثَّالِثِ تَفْسُدُ اهـ أَيْ لِأَنَّهُ عَمَلٌ كَثِيرٌ. وَظَاهِرُ التَّعْلِيلِ بِالْأَمْرِ أَنَّهُ يُطْلَبُ مِنْهُ الْمَشْيُ إلَيْهَا تَأَمَّلْ

وفي الحلبي إذا مشى في صلاته مشيا غير متدارك بأن مشى قدر صف ووقف قدر ركن ثم مشى قدر صف آخر هكذا إلى أن مشى قدر صفوف كثيرة لا تفسد صلاته إلا إذا خرج من المسجد إن كان يصلي فيه أو تجاوز الصفوف في الصحراء فإن مشى متلاحقا بأن مشى قدر صفين دفعة واحدة أو خرج من المسجد أو تجاوز الصفوف في الصحراء فسدت صلاته اهـ
