Radio Contests

Shortened Question:

What is the Islamic ruling on participating in radio contests?

Question:

Kindly tell me if participating in radio contests by sending our answer through an SMS which is charged 2 dhms allowed? I don’t listen to songs or watch movies. My sole interest is competitions. And the questions are mostly general knowledge. I change the frequency whenever a song is played and I tune back for competitions again.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Firstly, there is permissibility in listening to the radio as long as it serves an educational or religious purpose and does not comprise any sin, evil or a hindrance from fulfilling the obligations of Islam[1].

Secondly, from the presentation of your query, we understand that the dominant query is about taking part in radio contests by sending answers through SMS which cost two dirhams per message. If there will be prizes awarded in the contest, then that will constitute gambling and accordingly it will be prohibited[2].
