Forgetting in Salaah

Shortened Question:

Should I read surah fatiha and surah or not?

Question:

An elderly woman complains of being forgetful in salah, many a time she cannot remember if she read sura fatiha. Should she read the sura fatiha just to make sure, and should she follow it with a sura again

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, the individual should apply her mind and decide according to that which her mind is more inclined towards. However, if she is unable to ascertain and she is in doubt, then the most cautious opinion is to read the surah fātiha and sura again.

Nevertheless, there is a possibility that she had already recited sura fatiha before. Therefore, if she is praying the first two rak`ats of fardh salah and she recites the surah fatiha again due to forgetfulness, then she should exercise caution and perform sajda sahw at the end[1].

[1] If you repeat the surah fātiha in the first two rak`ats of fardh salāh, then it is necessary to perform sajda sahw. On the contrary, if the sura fātiha is repeated in the last two rak`ats of fardh salāh or it was repeated after adding any other surah in the first two rak`ats, then there is no sajda sahw necessary
