Reciting Qur`an: mus`haf or ipad?

Shortened Question:

Is it more rewarding and blessed to read the Quran from the mus`haf rather than on the iPad?

Question:

AssalamoAlaikum

I wish to know if there is a difference in the level of barkah or sawab on reading the Quran in hard-book form vs reading it on the iPad.

Someone once told me about a certain hadith in which Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) mentioned people of his ummah who would read the Qur`an which will be compiled between two hard covers. Is this true, does this mean that there is more sawab in reading it in book form? JazakAllah khair

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

  1. It is permissible to recite the Glorious Qur`an from the iPad and other electronic devices[1]. However, one must have wudhu (ablution) in order to touch the words of Qur`an on the screen[2]

Apart from the permissibility of reciting the Qur`an from electronic devices, the issue of spirituality is a strong consideration.

The Qur`an is the speech of Allah Ta`ala. When one recites the Glorious Qur`an, he is conversing with Allah and bonding with Allah Ta`ala. For that, the heart, soul and mind have to be filled with adab and respect for Allah Ta`ala and Qur`an. Our contact with the Qur`an is also a spiritual exercise and to gain closeness and proximity to Allah Ta`ala.

Consider the following:

Translation: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to take the Mushaf every dawn and kiss it and say: “the pact of my Lord and the proclamation of my Lord”. Similarly, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to kiss the Mushaf and wipe it over his face[3].

كان عكرمة بن أبي جهل يأخذ المصحف فيضعه على وجهه ويبكي ويقول كلام ربي كتاب ربي

Translation: Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) would often place the Mushaf on his face and weep, saying, “the speech of my Lord, the book of my Lord[4]

When reciting the Qur`an from the iPad, one will not be able to give the Qur`an the respect it deserves as it would be given using a Mus`haf`, for example, kissing the Qur`an, placing it on the face and head etc. The due respect, humility and reverence to the Qur`an will not be achieved through the iPad.

It is our advice that we retain reciting the Qur`an from the Mus`haf and not the iPad or any other electronic device unless there is a dire need to do so. The spirituality and honour of the Qur`an will be upheld in this way.[5]
