Male Hair

Shortened Question:

What is the maximum length of a Muslim male`s hair and what constitutes imitation of women? How is such a person`s Imamat?

Question:

Assalamu alaykum W. W

Muhtaram Hazrat Mufti sb,

Kindly enlighten me on the following issues in the light of Shari’ah:

What is the maximum shar’ee length of a Muslim male hair? If an imam’s hair is longer than the prescribed length, will it be considered as an imitation of women? What will be the status of such an imam’s imamat?

Jazak Allah.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible, in fact Sunnah, for males to grow their hair either up to the earlobe or even in line of or just above the shoulders. However, to lengthen long tresses of hair resembling women or sinners is impermissible[1]. Therefore, if the hair beyond the shoulders resemble the trait of a specific culture or immoral people,  it will not be permissible[2].

It is Makrooh-e-Tahrimi (prohibitively disliked) to forward such a person to lead Salah[3].

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
