Beard

Shortened Question:

What comprises a beard in sharia?

Question:

As Salamu Alikum Respected Mufti Saheb.

Where does the beard start and end? Is it permissible to remove excessive hair on the cheek bones? Also the hair above the chin and below the lower lip?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The beard comprises of the hair on the entire mandible (jawbone) on which the teeth grow[1] starting from the slightly protruding bone visible in front of the ear[2]. Any hair growing on or below the protruding bone is part of the beard[3]. It is permissible to remove the hair of cheeks[4]. However, it is impermissible to shave or clip the hair above the chin and below the lower lip[5].
