Isa / Jesus (Peace be Upon Him)

The accounts and narratives of the prophets hold great significance in our lives. They strengthen us in faith, increase us in hope, and provide us with great morals and lessons in life. A miraculous and esteem prophet who Allah mentions in His Glorious Qur`an in fourteen different chapters is the Prophet Isa / Jesus, the son of Maryam / Mary. His esteem position is further collaborated by the fact that the Glorious Quran introduces him with several identities, including, Isa, Messiah, the servant of God, the son of Mary, the word (kalimah) of Allah and the spirit (ruh) from Him.

The birth of Jesus

There was a woman called Maryam/ Mary. She was blessed and chosen from Allah upon the women of the worlds. Even as a young girl, should would have summer fruits during winter and winter fruits during the summer in her private room. Upon being questioned, she responded that it is from the special provisions of Allah which he blesses to whomsoever He wishes.

Maryam (may Allah be pleased with her) once went out for some reason and secluded herself in a place east of Masjid al-Aqsa. The angel Gabriel appeared before her in the form of a person. He then blew into the opening of her sleeve; and that breath entered her uterus and she became pregnant immediately.

She conceived him and withdrew with him to a far place in Bethlehem. The pains of childbirth drove her to a trunk of a date palm tree. Allah soothed and reassured her and caused a river to flow beneath her and fresh ripe dates to fall upon her. She thereafter brought the baby to the people, carrying him.

The people accused her of wrongdoing. When things became difficult for Maryam and she felt distressed because of what her people were saying, she gestured to the baby and the baby Isa/ Jesus miraculously conversed with the people and proclaimed to be a servant and prophet of Allah .

The creation of this child, Isa/ Jesus, was a sign of total and power of God to create in any way He wills. He who creates a seed for a tree is able to grow trees without seeds. He who creates water for crops is able to grow crops without water. He who is able to make a human without father or mother. He made Adam and Hawa (Eve) without father or mother. Would He then not able to make a baby from a female without the agency of a male?

Jesus in Islam

Isa/ Jesus (peace be upon him) was a noble servant and one of the eminent prophets of Allah. There was approximately a span of 570 years between Jesus and Prophet Muhammad (peace and salutations be upon them).

He was born miraculously from only a mother without a father.

Isa (peace be upon him) could perform many miracles with the will and help of Allah: He spoke to the people calling them to worship Allah alone while in the cradle; He cured the leper and the blind; He blew life in to birds made from clay; and He resurrected the dead back to life.

He travelled extensively to guide the people according to a Godly-given book called Injil and gave the glad-tidings of the coming of a last prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). He encountered many difficulties in the path of truthfulness; but he remained patient and steadfast.

He was neither killed nor crucified. Allah did not allow those who denied him to gain an upper hand over him; but He saved Isa/ Jesus and raised his soul and his body to the second heaven.

Jesus, the son of Mary, was raised alive in the heavens when he was thirty-three years old and he will live a further seven years after his descent to the world before the Last Hour. Hence, he will live in this world for a total of forty years. He will spread peace and justice everywhere.
